QUESTIONS?

What is a domain name?

A domain name Is the bit that follows the “www” part of an internet address which uniquely identifies the individual or business. It can be anything you choose, as long as the name is available - something as simple as www.[yourname]co.uk or your registered company or trading name, for instance.

What is a domain extension?

The domain extension is the suffix after the domain (such as .com or .co.uk). Some are generic, like [.com] or [.org] and some are country specific, like [.co.uk]. Some are not available to individuals (such as .gov) and some are very expensive (such as .tv)!

Can I have a different domain extension?

Yes, as long as it’s legal! Some, like [.tv] are very popular among media professionals and attract a premium price. The inclusive package assumes an address with a suffix such as [.co.uk].

Will I have my own email address?

Yes, you can set up an email address associated with your new domain name - so you’d be joe@joebloggs.co.uk, for instance. You can up to five unique email addresses associated with your domain, and you can of course keep your current email address in parallel.

How can I get the media to you?

“Web-ready media” can be supplied via FTP using services such as www.yousendit.com or on DVD by post.

How long should extracts be?

For a portfolio site it’s probably best to keep extracts to under 5’00”, and showreels shorter than that. Bigger files take a long time to download onto the visitor’s computer and may have to be reduced in quality to play acceptably.

What media formats do you recommend?

I can handle any common formats - AVI, QuickTime or Windows Media. The best is probably MP4 H.264 (the codec used to produce files for the iPhone and other portable media players). It’s excellent quality and small enough to send using services like www.yousendit.com. I can also work with media on DVD as long as it’s not copy protected. Anamorphic 16:9 and letterboxed media can be converted to standard stretched 16:9, and 4:3 will also be shown natively.

Which image format is best?

I can handle any common image format. PNG offers the most faithful reproduction but the file sizes are comparatively large, while jpeg are smaller and deliver good quality. Images should be delivered with copyright markings if possible.

What if I don’t have edited extracts ready?

I can arrange editing from DVDs if needed for an extra charge; please contact me for further details.

Are there any ongoing charges?

Hosting your site is completely free for the first year, and thereafter £50 per annum.

How do I update my website?

Adding up to three extra pages which conform to the existing layout with web-ready media will be free during the first year. More radical upgrades or redesigns will be quoted on a pro-rata basis, but minor changes such as updated CVs or replacing a showreel will be included in the package price.
